He had won an award (one of a great many) at MIT, and was lecturing on intricate hormonal interactions within the hippocampus.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/braindevs.net\/blog\/\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/01\/McEwen-Headshot.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-5325\" src=\"https:\/\/braindevs.net\/blog\/\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/01\/McEwen-Headshot-300x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.braindevs.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/01\/McEwen-Headshot-300x300.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.braindevs.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/01\/McEwen-Headshot-150x150.jpg 150w, https:\/\/www.braindevs.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/01\/McEwen-Headshot-768x768.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.braindevs.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/01\/McEwen-Headshot.jpg 978w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Even before he began speaking, the pulsing atmosphere in the crowded lecture hall made a vivid impression. The people around me vibrated with excitement, as if Lady Gaga or the Dalai Lama were about to come on stage. They clearly could not believe they were about to be in the same room with McEwen.<\/p>\n<p>I quickly understood why.<\/p>\n<p>As he began speaking, I thought\u2026<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">\u2026this is spectacularly complicated, but<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">\u2026he\u2019s presenting this information so clearly, I (a non-expert) can follow it without much difficulty, and<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">\u2026gosh, his enthusiasm for the topic reminds me of Christmas morning.<\/p>\n<p>Since that day, I\u2019ve understood his fans\u2019 excitement. So much of what we understand about stress \u2013 especially the neurobiology of stress \u2013 derives ultimately from McEwen\u2019s work.<\/p>\n<p>As I wrote when I first heard about his death, his <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Bruce_McEwen\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">contribution to this field<\/a> can\u2019t be exaggerated.<\/p>\n<p>Little wonder that he presented at four Learning and the Brain conferences \u2013 most recently in April of 2018.<\/p>\n<p>And, little wonder that the outpouring of sadness has been so widespread and heart-felt.<\/p>\n<p>We will miss his warmth, his insight, and his enthusiasm.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>I first heard Dr. Bruce McEwen talk about the neurobiology of stress in 2010.
