Instead, when we think we\u2019re multitasking, we\u2019re actually switching rapidly back and forth between two tasks. (Or, heaven help us, more than two tasks.)<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/braindevs.net\/blog\/\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/12\/AdobeStock_148168662_Credit.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-medium wp-image-4060\" src=\"https:\/\/braindevs.net\/blog\/\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/12\/AdobeStock_148168662_Credit-300x200.jpg\" alt=\"multitasking\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.braindevs.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/12\/AdobeStock_148168662_Credit-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.braindevs.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/12\/AdobeStock_148168662_Credit-768x512.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.braindevs.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/12\/AdobeStock_148168662_Credit-1024x683.jpg 1024w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>If either of those two tasks is cognitively complex, this rapid task switching imperils performance.<\/p>\n<p>So, to repeat: multitasking is baaaaad.<\/p>\n<h2>Surprising New Research\u2026<\/h2>\n<p>But what if, under unusual circumstances, it were beneficial?<\/p>\n<p>More precisely, what if <em>the <a href=\"https:\/\/journals.sagepub.com\/doi\/abs\/10.1177\/0956797618801013?journalCode=pssa&amp;\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">perception that I\u2019m multitasking<\/a><\/em> improves my performance.<\/p>\n<p>Here\u2019s how you might test such a question (especially if your name were Shalena Srna):<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">Ask two groups of students to transcribe a Shark Week video.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">Tell half of them that they\u2019re doing <strong>two things<\/strong>: learning by watching, and also transcribing.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">Tell the other half that they\u2019re doing <strong>one thing<\/strong>: learning by watching and transcribing.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">In other words, both groups of students do the same thing. But: one group thinks they\u2019re multitasking, and the other doesn\u2019t.<\/p>\n<p>Sure enough, in this study, students who thought they were multitasking did better. They wrote more words, and they remembered more of the video.<\/p>\n<p>Wow.<\/p>\n<h2>Curiouser and Curiouser<\/h2>\n<p>Srna and company didn\u2019t stop there. They kept testing their hypothesis.<\/p>\n<p>In another study, they asked students take a virtual art-museum tour. They told half of them that this required distinct tasks (listening and looking); the other half didn\u2019t get that instruction.<\/p>\n<p>Same results.<\/p>\n<p>In another version, they had participants solve two kinds of puzzles simultaneously: word searches and anagrams. Rather than tell half that the puzzles required dual-tasking (or not), they asked participants what they thought.<\/p>\n<p>Here again, those who spontaneously thought they were multitasking did better on the puzzles than those who didn\u2019t \u2013 even though they were all doing the same task.<\/p>\n<h2>In Search of an Explanation<\/h2>\n<p>This result, to put it mildly, seems bizarre. If multitasking makes me worse at something, why would <em>believing that I\u2019m multitasking<\/em> make me better?<\/p>\n<p>Srna &amp; Co. suggest one plausible explanation. If I think I\u2019m multitasking, then I might concentrate harder on the task.<\/p>\n<p>To test their hypothesis, they measured participants&#8217; pupil dilation when they did (or didn\u2019t) think they were multitasking. (We\u2019ve got good research showing that people who are more engaged in material have greater dilation.)<\/p>\n<p>Sure enough, people who believed they were multitasking had bigger pupils than those who did not.<\/p>\n<p>In fact, they rated themselves as less bored by the work they were doing.<\/p>\n<h2>Teaching Implications<\/h2>\n<p>This research strikes me as a) fascinating, b) thorough and thoughtful, and c) a smidge dangerous.<\/p>\n<p>Here\u2019s what I mean.<\/p>\n<p>Given these (highly persuasive) studies, we might be tempted to tell our students that they\u2019re multitasking when they\u2019re not \u2013 because their extra level of concentration will improve their learning.<\/p>\n<p>Alas, such a response would mistake <em>research<\/em> benefits for <em>school<\/em> benefits.<\/p>\n<p>In this case, if we tell our students that they\u2019re multitasking, good things might happen in the short term. However, in the long-term, they get the message that we think it&#8217;s okay.<\/p>\n<p>But, it isn\u2019t. Rapid task switching reduces learning. It <a href=\"https:\/\/braindevs.net\/blog\/\/the-neural-effects-of-media-multitasking\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">really does<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>In fact, students get counter-productive, pro-switching messages all the time. We need to work against this cultural programming.<\/p>\n<p>(One key strategy: they should see us conspicuously refusing to multitask. Hard-core monotasking adults are great role models.)<\/p>\n<h2>Reality Check<\/h2>\n<p>Srna and Co. begin their article with some amazing statistics. According to their survey, 84% of people think they\u2019re better-than-average multitaskers. In fact, almost 50% say they\u2019re tops in the field.<\/p>\n<p>Rather than use students&#8217; false beliefs to help them today, we should correct their beliefs to help them for a lifetime.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>We all know that multitasking is baaaaad.
