{"id":1414,"date":"2016-12-12T15:56:31","date_gmt":"2016-12-12T15:56:31","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/braindevs.net\/blog\/blog\/?p=1414"},"modified":"2017-12-31T16:08:14","modified_gmt":"2017-12-31T16:08:14","slug":"research-morsel-gender-differences-in-math-again","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.braindevs.net\/blog\/research-morsel-gender-differences-in-math-again\/","title":{"rendered":"Research Morsel: Gender Differences in Math (Again)"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"https:\/\/braindevs.net\/blog\/\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/12\/AdobeStock_41992792_Credit.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-1420 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/braindevs.net\/blog\/\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/12\/AdobeStock_41992792_Credit-300x248.jpg\" alt=\"AdobeStock_41992792_Credit\" width=\"502\" height=\"415\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.braindevs.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/12\/AdobeStock_41992792_Credit-300x248.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.braindevs.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/12\/AdobeStock_41992792_Credit-1024x848.jpg 1024w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 502px) 100vw, 502px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The journal <em>Intelligence<\/em> recently published an interesting study [1]\u00a0analyzing gender differences in cognitive abilities in the US and India.<\/p>\n<p>The question hovering in the background is\u2014as it so often is\u2014\u201care there innate gender differences in cognitive abilities?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>That is: we have lots of data showing gender differences in various measures of academic success; are those differences <em>inherent in genders<\/em>, or are they <em>socially created<\/em>? Or, a <em>combination<\/em> of both?<\/p>\n<p>To answer this question, you might look at the very best performers in\u2014say\u2014math. If there are substantially more boys in the top 5% of math scorers, and <em>if that substantial difference persists over time<\/em>, then you might think that&#8211;all other things being equal&#8211;boys are innately better at math.<\/p>\n<p>This study, however, shows that the difference has shrunk in the last twenty years\u2014in both the US and India. If gender differences in math are innate, then these results are a shocker.<\/p>\n<p>Of course, other readers might see this study reinforcing a theory of innate gender differences.<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Although there is a smaller difference in math success between genders, that difference does persist. That is: there are still more boys than girls at the very highest end of math performance.<\/li>\n<li>The gender difference at the high end of<em> verbal<\/em> performance has not changed. Girls still score higher than boys do on such tests.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>In my view, this study tends to confirm the hypothesis that <em>social forces exaggerate\u2014and perhaps create\u2014gender differences<\/em> in academic performance.<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>I suspect that gender differences in verbal performance haven\u2019t changed because we haven\u2019t focused on them with the same energy and creativity that we\u2019ve used to promote girls\u2019 self-perception in math.<\/li>\n<li>While math gender differences persist in the US and India, they vary quite widely by country [2]: an odd finding indeed if boys are naturally mathier than girls.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>Reasons to be cautious when interpreting this article\u2014and this blog post:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>This research looks at gender differences in one very specific way: math and verbal performance at the very high end (\u201cthe extreme right tail\u201d of the bell curve). There are MANY other ways to consider these complex questions, and we shouldn\u2019t let any one way determine our answer.<\/li>\n<li>We have only recently begun to understand that gender isn\u2019t always binary. I don\u2019t think many researchers in this field have found ways to analyze math performance of transgender students.<\/li>\n<li>The article is still behind a paywall, so I haven\u2019t seen the numbers. You might want to look at the underlying data to see if you find it persuasive.<\/li>\n<li>I, of course, have my own biases:\n<ol>\n<li>I think that gender differences in academic performance are much more likely to be socially created than innate [3, 4]. And so, it\u2019s not surprising that I interpret this article as I have. (It\u2019s also not surprising that I\u2019ve decided to write about it for the blog.)<\/li>\n<li>More broadly, I think the \u201cinnate differences\u201d hypothesis just isn\u2019t helpful to teachers. My job is to help this student learn academic material\u2014these facts, these procedures, these moral habits, these life lessons. If I clutter my brain with the belief that \u201cgirls can\u2019t do math,\u201d I do my students a deep disservice <em>because I make it harder for them to learn<\/em>. That is: my potentially false belief turns into a self-fulfilling prophecy.
